Next we laid out 16 rows, 120 foot long by 4 foot wide and used the Ford 8N and a ripper to loosen the soil. This accomplishes a couple of things, it allows water and air deeper to help decompose the plant material and it improves the tilth of the soil so that it will be easier to work with the horses in the spring and we hope it eliminates most of the compaction caused by conventional farming practices. We are planning on 4 foot wide strips with grass in between for pathways and to help control wind and soil erosion. It’s a kind of modified Strip-Tillage method as opposed to breaking out the entire piece of land
